Investing in Water Efficient Factories

Nestlé contributes to safeguard the environment
Investing in Water Efficient Factories

As a leading food and beverage company, water is at the core of Nestlé’s operations.

In Bangladesh, we are actively working to achieve water efficiency and sustainability across our factory operations. This is in line with our global objective of implementing the new and strengthened Nestlé Environment Requirements, which calls for water quality and waste discharge in our factory to help protect the environment.

Programme Description:

Previously, the incinerator that processed waste materials at Nestlé Bangladesh’s Sreepur factory used clean water. This inefficient use of drinking water was addressed by installing a feed pump with a filter, allowing for treated water to be used by the incinerator instead. The infrastructure upgrade has resulted in annual water savings of roughly 7,240,000 litres. Additional improvements in the existing factory equipment has resulted in the retention of rinsing and flush water, which has resulted in an additional annual water savings of roughly 1,424,000 litres. These infrastructural upgrades in our Sreepur factory have resulted in the gross total of annual water savings of roughly 8,650,000 litres, and have turned our factory water efficient.

Value to Society:

Water is essential for human survival and is indispensable to our daily lives. Yet, the gap between the supply and demand of safe fresh water is increasing and, by 2030, water withdrawals are predicted to exceed renewals if no action is taken. More-over, with Bangladesh being a water-stressed region, it is crucial that we continuously seek to improve the sustainability of our withdrawal, use and treatment of water. With conscientious efforts, Nestlé Bangladesh has been able to work towards this goal. Responsible water stewardship is critical for all of us and to the future of our business.

Value to Nestlé:

The improvements in the factory infrastructure have enabled us to meet our global objectives of implementing water savings project in our manufacturing facilities. Furthermore our annual water savings of roughly 8,650,000 litres has not only brought about cost optimization to Nestlé Bangladesh, but has allowed us to advocate for green practices in an effort to focus on water, which is one of our three main CSV pillars. Nestlé Bangladesh will continue to drive improvements in water efficiency and sustainability across its operations.
